MTI has installed and commissioned a 1200 ton press at its Albany, Oregon facility. The new press expands on MTI’s deep-draw and forming capabilities for a variety of applications in diverse markets. “Our deep-draw capabilities are now expanded in terms of diameter, length of product form, and wall thickness.” said Pat Coffey, VP of Operations at MTI and a twenty-seven year tenured employee. “The press not only has CNC capabilities for consistent operations across a single job but also, because of the equipment’s 84-inch stroke with 122-inches of daylight, allowing us to start with a two-inch thick titanium or tantalum plate and make it into a 65-inch long seamless tube.”
MTI’s forging capabilities are also getting a boost in terms of “build envelope” size and tonnage. Thicker material and material having denser properties can now be formed on the robust 60-inch by 60-inch press table. The equipment is extremely versatile and has already been commissioned to form tractor trailer receiver panels made from half-inch thick, high-strength carbon-steel and complex stainless steel aircraft wing-ribs with ease. Additionally, the press opens up new possibilities for MTI’s offerings to the coatings and thin-film industries using Tantalum, Copper, Titanium and Silver.
“The new press will allow us to deep draw up to two-inch material and back extrude product forms to thinner, longer dimensions than we ever have before.” added Kirt Curran, MTI’s Manager of Technical Services and a thirty-five year tenured employee.
MTI serves the Aerospace, Defense, High-Energy Physics, Medical, Semiconductor, Thin Film, Glass, Chemical Process and Scientific Industries.
